Richard G. MorseRichard G. Morse WINDHAM - Richard G. Morse, who was born, raised and lived in Windham, died on February 23 at Columbia Memorial Hospital. He was 87. He was predeceased by his parents Grant and Arcia (Traver) Morse, and two brothers, Grant and Ronald. After graduating from Windham-Ashland-Jewett Central School a year early so that he might serve his country in World War II, Richard enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the aircraft carrier USS Philippine Sea. Upon returning to Windham, he married his wife of 67 years, E. Ruth (Truby) Morse, and operated Morse's Grocery until it was destroyed by fire in 1976. Richard was the Windham Town Clerk from 1960 to 1980 and Clerk of the Greene County Legislature from 1980 until his retirement in 1989. He was also a Life Member of Windham Hose Co. #1, VFW Post 1545, The American Legion and the Windham U.M. Church. Richard is survived by his wife Ruth, and his three children: Richard, Jr. and his wife Kathleen; Keith, and Barbara Livsey and her husband Richard. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Mandi (David) Betts, Dennis Morse, Lindsay Morse, Karen (Brian) Lane, Kelly Sienkiewicz, Megan Morse, Richard Livsey, and great-grandson Jake Lane. Viewing hours will be held at Decker Funeral Home, Main Street, Windham on Wednesday, February 26 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be on Thursday, February 27 at the Windham U.M.Church at 11 a.m. Interment to follow at Windham Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Windham U.M. Church.
I can remember going into the grocery store with my mom. After growing up I joined the FD and would stop to pick Rich up at the end of the street and go to the fire call. Rich was a great man who cared for his community and helped in any way he could. You will be missed and my prayers go out to the family.
