Charles B. Tanner Jr.

Charles B. Tanner Jr., a lifelong resident of the Altamont and Knox communities, died peacefully at home on Friday, Sept. 4, 2026, surrounded by those he loved most. He was 81.

"Charles - known affectionately as "Chuck" - proudly served in the U.S. Navy as a young man," his family wrote in a tribute. "He continued his support for the Navy through his volunteer work aboard the USS Slater, where he put his 40-year career as a diesel mechanic to use in maintaining the ship.

"Chuck was a man of quiet strength and few words - except when sharing one of his many animal stories. Behind his gruff demeanor was a soft heart and a playful, fun-loving side. He was a man of many talents who expressed his love through countless acts of kindness.

"His uncomplicated approach to life made him a role model to his children and grandchildren, of whom he was immensely proud. He taught them the importance of hard work, attention to safety, devotion to family, taking a keen interest in how things work, and never paying someone to do something you can do yourself.

"Chuck will be fondly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him."

Charles B. Tanner Jr. is survived by his wife of 58 years, Phyllis Tanner; his son, Charles (Sarah); his daughter, Jodi (Jason); his grandchildren, Kaci, Sydni, Sam, Margot, and Luke; and his much-loved dog, Roger, who could always be found by his side.
