Berne- P. David "Dave" Smith, 59, died peacefully at home on Sunday, May 2, 2010 after a long illness. He was born on September 18, 1950 in North Hornell, NY, son of the late Paul and Beatrice Smith. He was a 1968 graduate of Canisteo Central School. In 1972, he graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in Civil Engineering and remained a lifelong Orange fan. He worked for the New York State Dept of Transportation from 1973 to 1976. In 1976, he went to work for the New York State Dept of Environmental Conservation; retiring in 2007 as the Director of Bureau B Environmental Remediation. Dave was an avid golfer and tennis player. He was very active in his community. He served as an elder in the Berne Reformed Church. He was a former Cub Master for Pack 79 in Berne. He was also a Boy Scout merit badge counselor and a BKW Little League coach. He was a member of the Board of Assessment Review for the Town of Berne. Dave is survived by his wife of 37 years Peggy Smith; two sons Colin D. Smith of Boston, MA and Ian R. Smith of Berne; three sisters Kristine (Michael) Micglire of Leesburg, FL, Diane (Tony) deWitte of San Juan Capistrano, CA, and Susan (James) Sanfilippo of Gainesville, GA as well as several nieces and a nephew. A funeral service will be held at 11am on Friday, May 7, 2010 at Berne Reformed Church. Friends may call on Thursday, May 6, 2010 from 4 to 8 PM at the Fredendall Funeral Home, Altamont. An interment will be held at a future date in Dave's home town of Canisteo in the Hillside Cemetery.
