Douglas Arthur Jones, age 73, passed away at 4:30 a.m. Easter Sunday. Born on
April 21, 1938, he was a lifelong resident of Berne.
Doug was the son of Howard and Lillian Jones (both deceased), and is survived by two brothers, Edwin (Carol Lynn Coronios) of Chatham, NY, and Roy (Charlotte) Jones of Berne; two sisters, Ruth (Hillery) Thibodeaux of Katy, TX, and Marilyn Mayers of Geneva, AL; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
Doug's favorite pastimes included drinking coffee while sitting on the front porch of his parents' home on Route 143, waving to passersby; buying coffee for all his friends at the Berne Store and Duke Dairy Bar (East Berne); and reliving wonderful memories of camping, fishing, and hunting trips with his parents and siblings. Many of these memories were from Eighth Lake and Wells campgrounds in the Adirondacks, the St. Lawrence River, Canada, Florida Keys, and the White River area of Arkansas.
During his younger years, Doug worked for the NYS Department of Transportation and Albany County Highway Department.
Visitation and service will be Saturday, April 14, at the Helderberg Lutheran Church in Berne, with visitation beginning at 9 a.m. and the service at 10 a.m. Following a brief gravesite service at Woodlawn Cemetery, a light luncheon will be offered to family and friends in the church fellowship hall.
Those who wish to remember Doug's kindness and generosity in a giving way are encouraged to make a donation to the Helderberg Lutheran Church, in lieu of flowers.
Doug's family would like to extend a special thank you to Farrell Virga of Fredendall's Funeral Home for all his assistance. The sincere, concerned, personal attention offered by a family-owned, hometown business cannot be measured in other ways.
