East Berne

Gail E. Golden, 81, of East Berne, New York, passed away on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.

Gail was the daughter of the late Harry A. Marshall Jr. and Marion Marshall. She grew up in Lindenhurst, Long Island, alongside her two brothers, Harry and Robert, and attended Lindenhurst High School. In her younger years, she was active in her church choir.

Gail attended the State University of New York at New Paltz and went on to earn a master's degree in biology education. While at New Paltz, she met her future husband, Joseph A. Golden, with whom she would share 60 years of marriage. After a brief time in New Jersey, Gail and Joe settled in East Berne.

Together, Gail and Joe owned and operated the Maple Inn in East Berne for nearly 30 years. Gail spent her days managing the business and her evenings cooking, a pursuit she genuinely enjoyed. An admirer of Julia Child, she appreciated the art of combining flavors and the details of preparing and presenting a meal. The Maple Inn became a familiar gathering place for local residents and visitors from surrounding communities, bringing together neighbors, family, and friends over the years.

Independent and hardworking, Gail was known for her quick wit and a touch of sarcasm. In retirement, she and Joe traveled extensively across the country in their RV, from East Coast beaches and the Florida Keys to the national parks of the American West, with countless adventures in between.

At home, Gail enjoyed tending to her property, planting perennials and fruit trees, and creating a small Zen garden. Her appreciation for nature extended to collecting rocks and minerals. Gail also enjoyed painting during her college years, and a few of her still-life paintings remain in the family home today. An avid reader, she also enjoyed movies, Sudoku, bingo, Tetris, video poker, and NASCAR. She enjoyed summer visits to Saratoga and the racetrack, listening to James Taylor and Rod Stewart, and especially her Sunday visits with her granddaughter, Sara.

Gail is survived by her husband, Joseph A. Golden; her children, Teresa (Tony) Golden and William (Melissa) Golden; her granddaughter, Sara; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and her brothers, Harry and Robert Marshall.
