Gwendolyn Wakefield

Gwendolyn Yager Wakefield, 90, of Lantana, FL and a longtime resident of Windham, died peacefully at the JFK Medical Center/Hospice Care Unit on July 11, 2012. Loving wife of the late Lewis A. Wakefield. Devoted mother of 5 children; Sharon & Ed Carpenter of Sayville,NY; Marcia & Joe Petrosino of Laughlin, NV; John & Maria Wakefield of Newton, MA; Melanie Bryan of Coral Springs, FL; and Debra & Richard Connor of Longmeadow, MA. Proud Grandmother of 11, and Great Grandmother of 13. Gwen was raised in Hensonville, went to WAJ Central School, Houghton College and LPN from Albany Med. She and husband Lew owned and operated Wakefield's Pharmacy in Windham from 1955 to 1976. She was the Organist and Choir Director at the Windham United Methodist Church and participated in many other local organizations. She also volunteered for the National Heart Association. After retirement she enjoyed walking on the beach, family visits and ballroom dancing. Funeral arrangements were handled by Decker Funeral Home, burial in the PV Cemetery next to her husband.
