Howard (Howie) Waymark Borden, age 93, passed away on January 7, 2026. He was born in Albany on March 4, 1932, to the late William D. Borden and Helen R. (Heacox) Borden. Howie was a graduate of Altamont High School, Class of 1948.
Howie graduated from SUNY Cobleskill in 1950 and worked in food service at Knolls Atomic Lab in Schenectady. He was accepted in the G.E. Apprentice Program and was drafted into the U.S. Army where he saw active duty in the Korean Conflict as a Communications Specialist in the 3rd Division - 15th Regiment, earning the Combat Infantryman Badge. In 1954, upon his return home, he resumed his training as a toolmaker at Schenectady G.E. Howie worked at G.E. for 16 years at Schenectady, Johnson City and Hudson Falls before joining IBM in Kingston. After 25 years at IBM, in Kingston and Poughkeepsie, Howie retired in 1992.
Howie was active in sports as a G.E. softball player, umpire in IBM softball leagues, many years as a bowler, and a Little League baseball coach. In retirement and returning to the Albany area, he became a life member and Commander of VFW Post 5294, Guilderland. Upon moving to Altamont, Howie was active in VFW Post 7062 (Boyd Hilton Post).
Each summer, Howie looked forward to gardening and exhibiting his vegetables at the Altamont Fair. He loved watching baseball (especially the Yankees), and enjoyed doing crosswords, jumble and word search puzzles. He loved to tell stories, and often started them with, "It was funny...." For many years, he volunteered for the Albany Police Athletic League toys for tots program.
Howie is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Jeanne C. (Schinnerer) Borden. They enjoyed traveling to the Great Smokey Mountains and Vermont, often in their motor home.
