Melissa Worden, 68, of East Berne, New York, passed away suddenly at her home on June 7, 2026, leaving behind a family and community that were made better simply by knowing her.
Born on November 13, 1957, in Ilion, New York, Melissa lived a life rooted in kindness, service, humor, and an unwavering commitment to helping others. A talented dancer in her younger years, she eventually found her true calling in education. After earning her teaching degree, Melissa devoted 35 years to teaching Special Education at Coxsackie - Athens High School, where she became a champion for students who needed someone to believe in them. She had a gift for seeing potential in people, often long before they saw it in themselves.
On July 18, 1981, Melissa married the love of her life, Judd Worden. Ever practical, she chose a wedding date just two days after Judd's birthday so he would never have an excuse to forget their anniversary.
Melissa believed that helping others wasn't't something you did occasionally-it was simply how you lived. She volunteered faithfully at Christ Episcopal Church in Greenville and with the Berne Friends of the Library. She regularly donated blood, gave her time freely, and never hesitated to lend a hand to someone in need.
Her compassion extended to animals as naturally as it did to people. Throughout the years, a steady parade of cats somehow found their way to her doorstep and inevitably into the family. No matter how they arrived, Melissa always seemed to find room for one more. She also had a special relationship with Hemi, the family dog. While Hemi technically belonged to her daughter Sarah and son-in-law Matthew, he made it abundantly clear that Melissa was his favorite person. Whether it was daily walks, treats, or simply her company, Hemi's loyalty was never really up for debate.
Melissa found joy in the simple things that make a life beautiful. She loved gardening, sewing, spending time outdoors, and creating a home filled with warmth and comfort. She was funny, quick-witted, and possessed the rare ability to make people feel instantly at ease. She was the kind of person who remembered the small details, checked in on others, and always found ways to make people feel cared for.
Melissa was predeceased by her parents and her beloved sister, Patricia Jones.
She is survived by her devoted husband of nearly 45 years, Judd Worden; her daughter, Sarah Stonesifer, and Sarah's husband, Matthew Stonesifer; her cherished grandson, Easton Stonesifer, who brought endless joy and pride to her life; her nephew, Sydney Jones; her niece, Lindsey Hausman; and many friends, former students, and colleagues who were fortunate enough to experience her kindness.
