Altamont- Pauline Beatrice Stevens Gaige died on April 24, 2016 of long term kidney disease at Our Lady of Mercy Care in Guilderland, New York. Pauline was the second child of 13 born to Miner and Beatrice Stevens, Sr. on February 26, 1927. Pauline grew up on a farm in Knox, NY and attended Berne-Knox (Westerlo). Pauline and George purchased a farm in Knox, NY where they raised their family. Pauline was a stay at home mom with seasonal jobs at NYS Tax and Finance and the US Census. As her children grew older, she sold Fashion 220 makeup and later worked as a manager for Decorama Inc. After selling their farm, Pauline and George operated the La Croix Motel in Malta, NY. Later they built a new home in Guilderland, where she created beautiful iris gardens. A devoted member of the Reformed Church, Pauline was the first female elder with the Knox Reformed Church and later served in many capacities with the Helderberg Reformed Church. Pauline, with her husband George, enjoyed camping and travelled to all 50 states. Pauline joined the Albany Curling Club in 1982 and continued to curl until two years ago. She was an active volunteer, including serving as president. She truly enjoyed the people, the competition and experience of curling. One of her legacies at the curling club was her pie making expertise. She learned many sewing techniques over the years and became an established seamstress. She made her daughters' wedding gowns, many beautiful quilts and crafts. Pauline was predeceased by her beloved husband George Gaige whom she married July 3, 1952 and he died on July 19, 2002; her daughter Donna Porter who passed suddenly on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 (notice of her obituary to follow); her parents; siblings, Robert, Donald, Frank, Douglas and Betty Stevens. Pauline is survived by her children, Jeanette (Donald) Davidson, Dennis (Cindy) Gaige, and Sharlene (John Condemi) Vanderbilt, her son-in-law Garry Porter; her beloved grandchildren, Stephen (Pam) Porter, Kelly Porter, John (Lori) Porter, Nora (Dave) Adamek, Christopher, Tyler and Nolan Gaige, Jason (Laurie) Vanderbilt, and Eric Vanderbilt; great grandchildren, Bryant Bickford, Ashley Porter, Estelle Porter, Gregory and Theodore Adamek and Ava Vanderbilt; great-great grandchildren, Madison Leffler and Hayleigh Bickford. She is survived by her sisters, Martha Van Beusichem, Barbara West and Diane Ehmann and brothers, Miner Jr., Roger, Kenneth and Gilbert Stevens and sister in law, Evelyn Saddlemire. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff of the Dialysis Center, Atria Crossgate, Albany Medical Center, and Our Lady of Mercy Care. Family and friends may call from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Friday, April 29th at Fredendall Funeral Home in Altamont NY. A memorial service will be at the Helderberg Reformed Church in Guilderland Center, NY at 11:30am on Saturday, April 30th.
