Richard C. Bell Sr., 81, of Fort Edward, New York, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2026, surrounded by his family at Glens Falls Hospital. Born in Wright, New York, on June 7, 1944, Richard built his life on hard work and personal responsibility. He spent his career as a Construction Superintendent, a role that reflected his practical nature and strong work ethic. He understood how things were built, how to lead a job site, and how to see a project through to completion.
Richard was a devoted husband to Mary Bell. He was the father of Richard C. Bell Jr., Norman O. Bell (deceased), and Theodore S. Bell. He was also a stepfather to Jason Freeguard, Jamie Freeguard, and Jessica Freeguard. His family included 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He is survived by his siblings, Thelma Patschureck and Dewitt Bell.
Richard was known for his steady personality and sharp sense of humor. He was an excellent carpenter with a natural ability to build and create. In his younger years, he was an accomplished fisherman who appreciated time outdoors. Later in life, he took pride in his garden, growing exceptional tomatoes each summer, even though he never cared much to eat them himself. Above all, Richard was a religious man with a strong love for Jesus. His faith was central to his life and guided the way he viewed the world. He believed in personal accountability, prayer, and the promise of eternal life. That conviction gave him strength throughout his life.
Family and friends are invited and may call in the Fredendall Funeral Home, 199 Main Street, Altamont on Friday February 13th from 4pm until 6pm. A prayer service will immediately follow the visitation in the funeral home. Interment will be in Knox Cemetery in the spring.
Richard's life was defined by his work ethic, his craftsmanship, and his enduring faith.
