Elgie, Thelma I. - Altamont
Thelma I. Elgie, longtime resident of Altamont, passed away peacefully on May 30th in Albany with her loving family by her side. Born in 1922, she was the daughter of the late George and Hattie Spawn Gade. Beloved wife of the late Augustus "Jim" Elgie Jr. who died in 1956.
Thelma spent her childhood growing up on the Gade Farm in Guilderland. A graduate of Altamont High School, Thelma spent her adult life in Altamont. Thelma and Jim married in 1947 and started their family living in the Fredendall Funeral Home as the owners. Following Jim's death in 1956 Thelma continued being a homemaker for some time, later returning to work at Bender Laboratory and ultimately retiring from the Altamont Library. Thelma will be fondly remembered by her family as a caring and loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother.
Thelma is survived by her son James (Vanessa) H. Elgie and daughters Eileen Wintle and Dawn (Clay) LaPorte, her grandchildren Kerry (Munyaradzi) Delaney Masawi and Stephanie Wade Carter. Also surviving are her great grandchildren Kayla, Austin, Madison, Sebastian, Olivia, Alexandra and great-great grandchildren, Miles, Mila, Winston, and her sister Dianne Gade and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Thelma is predeceased by her granddaughter Emily J. Elgie. Also predeceased by her siblings May, Betty, Sylvia, and Dave.
Family and friends are invited to visit with Thelma's family in Thelma's former home, Fredendall Funeral Home 199 Main Street Altamont on Wednesday June 5th from 5-7pm. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 10am on Thursday June 6th. Interment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in the Elgie family plot, returning to Jim after 68 years immediately following the service.
