Altamont - William J. Tomajer, 88, passed away on June 15, 2011 at the Guilderland Center Nursing Home. Born April 12, 1923 in Jefferson, NY, he was the son of the late John and Mollie (Dusha) Tomajer. He was a graduate of Jefferson High School. After graduation he joined the Army Air Corp. He was assigned to the 385th Bomb Group 550 1st Squadron and flew over 31 missions. He was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross Ribbon with 2 oak leaf clusters, Air Force and Army Good Conduct medals, National Defense Service Medal, Airmans Medal ribbon with 3 oak leaf clusters and the Air Force Presidential Unit Citation Award with oak leaf cluster. He was Past Commander and Life member of the Altamont VFW Post #7062 and member of the Altamont American Legion Post #0977. In 1945, Bill worked for Henry Schaffer Trucking Co. In 1950, he opened his restaurant: Zane & Bills located on Western Turnpike. He later worked for Lane Construction Company. In 1970, Bill married Charlotte Peters Burt and then began his business, Economy Remodeling; retiring in 1983. Bill and Charlotte organized and worked at the VFW Booth at the Altamont Fair. They spent many winters in Dade City, Florida. Survivors include his brother Charles and Mickey Tomajer of Guilderland, two nieces Colleen Abbate, Schenectady, NY and Tracy Tomajer, Voorheesville, NY and nephew Timothy Tomajer, Mesa, Arizona; 1great niece and 1 great nephew. 9 step-children Winston (Ellen) Burt of Valatie, NY, Charlene (David) Stevens of Altamont, NY, Stephen Burt of Poughkeepsie, NY, Kenneth (Ronnie) Burt of Queensbury, NY, Craig (Joann) Peters of Oxford, CT, David Burt of Poughkeepsie, NY, Kerry (Barbara) Peters of Altamont, NY, Janet (William) Fennell of Mechanicville, NY and Jeffrey Burt of Altamont, NY; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Beside his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Charlotte Peters Tomajer. A funeral service and interment with Military Honors will be held at 12PM on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery. Friends may call on Saturday June 18, 2011 from 1 to 3 PM at the Fredendall Funeral Home, Altamont.
